for the subculture that I will be researching and working with for this project, I have “fortune-tellers”.

fortune-telling, the forecasting of future events or the delineation of character by methods not ordinarily considered to have a rational basis. Evidence indicates that forms of fortune-telling were practiced in ancient China, Egypt, Chaldea, and Babylonia as long ago as 4000 bce. Prophetic dreams and oracular utterances played an important part in ancient religion and medicine. Today fortunetelling is more commonly thought of as a scam or hoax, but there are still enough believers out there to keep it alive. fortunetelling comes in many different forms including but not limited to tasseography (reading tea leaves or coffee grounds), omens, dreams, runes, goemancy, I Ching or Book of Changes, scrying, palmistry, astrology, cardomancy (cards).

thinking about websites

site map-02

I laid out a site map for the structure of my soon to be portfolio site. I want a pretty minimal, bold feel. like a good one-liner that’s to the point but is memorable. Im also interested in single page portfolio sites with the infinite scroll and the nav just that jumps you down the page.

Here are some websites that I came across that I really enjoyed:

http://enjoythis.co.uk/about/

http://www.knucklesindustries.com/

http://www.designeat.com/

Home

http://briangartsi.de/

oh, and this is a site that everyone should check out, where you can scroll through a gallery of websites from all over that have been deemed “the best designs” and they also have a gallery for templates for different sites:

awkward people vs. conversation

reading response to how awkward people can start non-awkward conversations:

Are you sure I won’t die if I talk to a new person? because it really is terrifying.

I feel this article was good for me, as social awkwardness/inner freak outs tend to be my specialty. It’s really reassuring to hear that I am not alone in my fear of social situations. With that in mind, maybe it’ll be a bit easier to start a conversation on account of we already have something in common – pals in no time! I was also glad to hear that the answer to getting over this fear is not diving head first into social butterfly land; but can be a less intimidating baby step program. But the important thing is to get that exposure, even if it’s just small doses at first. I feel that the longer that I avoid these social situations, the harder it is to take that first step. This article was full of great advice. A good one to go back to for a reminder that I will not die if I talk to a new person.

Amarillo Globe News Progress

Refining my design and applying it to all the pages. I wanted an open, airy, clean feel. I also wanted to play with having two distinct planes to make the information and articles more prominent.

How to: The Making of

just some proof of process.

Process Post

We did our first attempt at creating slingshots last week. Jodi found some branches on the ground. Since they were on the ground she just let them dry overnight, though for our video we will be drying them in front of a fire. For Jodi’s slingshot she got all of the bark off and sanded the branch down. On the one I made we tested how it would look if we left the bark on the branch. Painting them was difficult when the bark was on because the surface wasnt smooth so I couldnt get very clean lines. We tried using rubberbands of different widths and lengths and found that a medium width worked the best. We also learned from my dad that you need to find a branch with straight arms so that you can aim. Overall our first attempt was pretty successful. We still need to gather some supplies like the leather, which our first slingshots the leather was too soft and the knots on the rubberbands stretched out the holes and could of slipped through which isnt very effective in a fight. We will also need to get some sd cards for my camera before we can begin test shooting today. pictures to follow…

Here is our storyboard for our video:

Process in website design

This is my first stab at delving into the actual design design for the Amarillo Globe News website. I struggled a lot with this, and plan to spend alot more quality time with this step. So, come back soon ladies and gents.

self brading

Here is some progress I’ve made on my self-branding, I’m still stuck between the lettermark vs. the lion. And I also included my resume, which will probably change a bit.

identity//dreamy idealist

hello, my name is Jodi Ann Brewer and according to extensive testing and evaluation, I am a dreamy idealist.

I am timid and shy, I tend to day dream, I am playful and quirky, passionate, positive, really positive, calm but not always collected, easily amused, contemplative, introverted, theoretical, emotional, spontaneous, idealistic, dreamy, effusive, pleasant, reserved, friendly, passionate, helpful, creative, composed, curious, obstinate, with integrity, willing to make sacrifices, romantic, cautious, peace-loving, vulnerable, sensitive, communicative, imaginative.

goals and reading

reading:

I love the way that Frank Chimero approached this essay. His advice, laced with humor, keeps you hooked, like reading a list of great one-liners or inside jokes just for you (it just has that kind of personable feeling to it). And I feel like it’s direct enough and not overly embellished that the things that you connect with while you’re reading can easily stick with you. “the best communicators are gift-givers” or “design is just a message, not a language.” and of course, always solid advice “stop trying to be cool”.

short term goals:

I want to get an internship this summer, preferably SHS or Pentagram. But if I’m aiming too high with those, just a nice design internship. I would also like to aim for an internship that pays. I’ve had two unpaid internships already which were great, but money makes the world go round.

I want to work on my speaking abilities…I’ve been known to suffer from a bit of social anxiety, so I feel that improvement in that area would help on my career path and life in general.

long term goals:

For the long term, for the mystifying future looming ahead, I like to picture myself in some sort of long term relationship with a design job, working for a studio, a worker bee on a team (branching out on my own isn’t something I see myself doing). I don’t know where I’ll be though, I think I want to try to stay in Kansas City for a while, but maybe I’ll end up making my way back to Texas. I really do love Texas.

I also want to write a book.  That’s just kind of a task that has always been on my list – That when I get older and am plump full of life experiences, I want to write a book. I want to be a neatly placed slot on a shelf in a dusty old library, and I want to live there forever.

Job listings:

my love for design is only challenged by my love of literature, so I would probably love designing for a publisher.

If I could get this one, I might just die.

It says it’s “a once-in-a-lifetime experience”. who could pass that up?

okay, so they might not have a job listing, but they have an email address. and where there’s a will there’s a way.
