goals and reading

reading:

I love the way that Frank Chimero approached this essay. His advice, laced with humor, keeps you hooked, like reading a list of great one-liners or inside jokes just for you (it just has that kind of personable feeling to it). And I feel like it’s direct enough and not overly embellished that the things that you connect with while you’re reading can easily stick with you. “the best communicators are gift-givers” or “design is just a message, not a language.” and of course, always solid advice “stop trying to be cool”.

short term goals:

I want to get an internship this summer, preferably SHS or Pentagram. But if I’m aiming too high with those, just a nice design internship. I would also like to aim for an internship that pays. I’ve had two unpaid internships already which were great, but money makes the world go round.

I want to work on my speaking abilities…I’ve been known to suffer from a bit of social anxiety, so I feel that improvement in that area would help on my career path and life in general.

long term goals:

For the long term, for the mystifying future looming ahead, I like to picture myself in some sort of long term relationship with a design job, working for a studio, a worker bee on a team (branching out on my own isn’t something I see myself doing). I don’t know where I’ll be though, I think I want to try to stay in Kansas City for a while, but maybe I’ll end up making my way back to Texas. I really do love Texas.

I also want to write a book.  That’s just kind of a task that has always been on my list – That when I get older and am plump full of life experiences, I want to write a book. I want to be a neatly placed slot on a shelf in a dusty old library, and I want to live there forever.

Job listings:

my love for design is only challenged by my love of literature, so I would probably love designing for a publisher.

If I could get this one, I might just die.

It says it’s “a once-in-a-lifetime experience”. who could pass that up?

okay, so they might not have a job listing, but they have an email address. and where there’s a will there’s a way.
